Grants in Action: Poulsbo Elementary Kids Get The Wiggles Out

K-2 Students Can Now Take Advantage of Additional Seating Options at Poulsbo Elementary.

With grant funding from NKSF, Poulsbo Elementary’s K-2 students now have additional flexible seating options thanks to a 2023-2024 grant application submitted by Andrea Cuellar.

Studies have shown that flexible seating options can improve engagement and collaboration among some students, and allow other students greater freedom of movement to enhance focus and physical health. The results are apparent in our own classrooms as well, as Andrea reports:

“I have seen students able to focus more in class because they are meeting their sensory needs and getting the movement they need even while seated… it has helped many kids, especially our Neurodivergent students that need a little more movement when sitting.”

While some students may work well in a traditional seating arrangement, we’re discovering that other students begin to flourish when the options are available to them. In the Grant Impact Report Andrea submitted at the end of last school year, she adds:

“I have a student in second grade that was recently diagnosed with ADHD and struggles to focus in class. I gave her one of the flexible seats to use that wobbles and she absolutely loves it. She says it helps her stay focused while still able to get her wiggles out.”

Through support from donors, NKSF is proud to provide options for NKSD students that need additional support to “get the wiggles out” so that they focus, learn, and excel. Exactly the type of support that goes beyond the basics.
