Grants Awarded
The North Kitsap Schools Foundation’s Classroom Grant Program provides funding for innovative, creative learning and administrative opportunities unfunded by other means. Primary consideration is given to projects that support and enhance education for many students and include active student involvement. NKSF also recognizes the needs of beginning teachers in establishing their classrooms.

Mimio Interactive Technology. Elizabeth Acton, Poulsbo Middle School language arts and social studies teacher, acquired a portable system that allows the teacher and students to interact with material projected on a white board. (2009, $549)
Across Cultures: Book Collection. Poulsbo Elementary School librarian, Nancy Bale, assembled a collection of books for elementary students to use in their study of Peru. The kit is available in the library for checkout to any teacher. (2009, $299.07)
Peer Mentor Teams “MentorPro” Software. Poulsbo Middle School Peer Mentoring Program Coordinator, Ginny Bell, will acquired a standardized and scientifically-based system for tracking and evaluating mentoring practices and outcomes. (2009, $250)
Portable Digital Recording of Musical Endeavors. Wolfle Elementary School music specialist, Michael McCurdy, purchased a recording system to assist in music instruction feedback and to allow for the creation of recordings of performances that students can keep. Social/Emotional/Behavioral Skills Literature for Book Clubs. Carolyn Mosiman, counselor at Vinland Elementary, acquired sets of three books for use by 3rd through 5th grade teachers and weekly book clubs facilitated by the school counselor. (2009, $250)
Leveled Books for Kindergarten English Language Learners. NK School District English Language Learner (ELL) Program Coordinator, Suzy Rau, purchased a new series of books for ELL teachers to use with their Kindergarten students. (2009, $324.50)
Rosetta Stone Headphones. North Kitsap High School teacher, Ann Almond, purchased headphones with built-in microphones to use with the Rosetta Stone software purchased by the English Language Learners program so that students would not interrupt others using adjacent computers. (2008, $150)
Culture Kit of Peru. Poulsbo Elementary School librarian, Nancy Bale, assembled a “culture kit” containing materials that she purchased in Peru. The kit is available in the library for all grades. Funds were used to reimburse her for her purchases. (2008, $414.90)
“Airliner” Wireless Computer Control Tablet. Kingston High math teacher, Corey Burchill, purchased a hand-held wireless tablet to be used from anywhere in the classroom to input material to be projected to the front of the room. The teacher uses it as he moves around the classroom and students can use it from their desk so that they do not have to go to the board at the front of the room. (2008, $539.42)
Rolling Reader Program Books. Suquamish Elementary Rolling Reader Program Coordinator, Terri Day, purchased books for the 76 students enrolled in their reading tutoring program. Adult volunteers and secondary school volunteers tutor Suquamish students year round. (2008, $500)
Guided Language Acquisition Design – G.L.A.D. To Do Science. The First Grade Teaching Team at Poulsbo Elementary, led by Lisa Hawkins, purchased materials to build a unit to teach biological life cycles, using the G.L.A.D. method of teaching, which focuses on visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning. Storypath – “The Struggle for Independence in Colonial Boston.” Vinland 5th grade teacher, Deborah Kidder, purchased a Rand McNally Storypath kit to be used by all 5th grade students in a four to six week role-playing unit where they are confronted with historical events and cultural attitudes and practices that prevailed at the time of the American Revolution. Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK) Curriculum. Robert Webb, physical education teacher at Breidablik Elementary, purchased this curriculum, which is specifically designed for kindergarten through second grade students. The curriculum includes nutrition instruction units which will enable the students to understand the relationship of nutrition to physical fitness and body composition. (2008, $206.99)
Response to Intervention Program Supplemental Books. Poulsbo Elementary Learning Specialist, Joyce Schultz, purchased a series of books from the Reading Recovery Program for her new reading intervention program, which seeks to accelerate the progress of struggling early readers. (2008, $300)
Reading Comprehension Toolkit Bundle. Wolfle Elementary teachers, Stephanie Pugh and Trang McGillivray purchased primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) level reading comprehension toolkits to use with their 1st and 5th grade students in a pilot program to improve their students’ reading comprehension skills across the curriculum. English Language Learner Books for Middle School Readers. Poulsbo Middle School teacher, Janet Kragen, purchased a set of books specifically intended to assist ELL students to improve their nonfiction/academic vocabulary and reading level. (2008, $275)
Pearson Rhythm In Drumming Ensemble (P.R.I.D.E.). Pearson Elementary music teacher, Tamera Rabura, purchased African style drums to be used by the newly formed P.R.I.D.E. group and in music classes. (2008, $442.32)
English Language Learner Newcomer Support Materials. NK School District English Language Learner (ELL) Program Coordinator, Suzy Rau, purchased a new series of books for ELL teachers to use with the increasing number of non-English speaking high school age students arriving in North Kitsap Schools. Listen, Read, Learn Program Headphones. Poulsbo Elementary 1st grade teacher, Carolyn Robinson, purchased headphones for all of the 1st grade classes to use in the school computer lab when they are using their Internet based curriculum, Listen, Read, Learn. (2008, $350)
First Grade Art Curriculum – Tracy Zeringer – Poulsbo Elementary – Ms Zeringer, as a first year teacher purchased art materials to be used in an art curriculum that is integrated with science, math, and language arts units. The material is shared with all first grade teachers at Poulsbo. (2007, $335)
Traditional Arts of Japan Outside the Classroom – Kari Denton – Kingston High - The grant helped fund activities where the students experienced a tea ceremony, a bonsai activity, and building a Japanese style gate at Kingston High. (2007, $300)
Discrepant Events – Jerrine Gabrio – Breidablik Elementary – Funds were used to buy materials for an original integrated science and writing curriculum which uses “discrepant events” (unexpected results) as its theme. (2007, $300)
Build a Marimba – Cynthia Gilman – Breidablik Elementary – Ms Gilman led a collaboration of parents, students, and a local business to build marimbas for the use of Breidablik student musical groups. (2007, $500)
Sustainability Curriculum and Pea Patch – Bob Geballe – Spectrum Community School – Mr Geballe developed a “Sustainability” curriculum for high school students, part of which is creating a vegetable garden at the school. Grant funds were used to buy supplies for students to use to build the garden enclosure, provide irrigation, and purchase seeds and plants. (2007, $600)
Lights and Shadows – Beverly Godfrey – Vinland Elementary – The grant allowed Ms Godfrey to enhance the first grade unit on lights and shadows with three experiments which require flashlights, batteries, and colored flood lights. (2007, $225)
Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) Application– Laurie Harney – Poulsbo Elementary – Ms Harney purchased visual aids to use with her fourth grade students in applying what she learned in the GLAD training that she recently completed. (2007, $300)
Wildlife Habitat Project – Lisa Hawkins – Poulsbo Elementary – This project helped transformed the school courtyard into a certified wildlife habitat by adding specific plants, providing bird seed, and a water source. (2007, $400)
Accommodations to Enhance Learning – Susan Longan – Poulsbo Elementary - The first grade teaching team purchased items such as filters for fluorescent lights, bean bag chairs, exercise music, and others for assessing ways to improve the classroom learning environment. (2007, $400)
Promoting Bilingual Literacy – Laura Lopez – North Kitsap High – Ms Lopez purchased children’s books written in Spanish for a Spanish class library which is used to develop vocabulary, grammatical skills, and literacy in students studying Spanish. (2007, $250)
Greeting Card Making – Carolyn Mosiman – Vinland Elementary – This project uses “card making” as a vehicle for teaching interpersonal skills, and specifically is used by the counseling staff at Vinland as they work with counseling support groups and individual students. The grant provided funds to purchase materials. (2007, $400)
Suquamish Elementary Rhythm and Power Ensemble (SERAPE) – Tamera Rabura – Suquamish Elementary – The school purchased additional drums for the growing musical group. (2007, $415.40)
Aeronautics for Everyone – Mark Stebbing – Kingston Middle School – Mr. Stebbing purchased “White Wings” paper airplane kits to provide “hands on” design, construction, and flight test experience for the 7th grade science unit on aeronautics. (2007, $300)
Growing Gardens with Wolfle – Maria Steinbeisser – Wolfle Elementary – The grant helped pay for the construction of a wheel chair and walker accessible path through the new garden of native plants, vegetables, and herbs adjacent to the Wolfle playground. (2007, $300)
Five for Life Program – Robert Webb – Breidablik Elementary – Funds paid for a physical education curriculum that builds the habit of, and an appreciation for, living a fit and healthy life. (2007, $249.55)
Anatomy Field Trips– Patricia Webster – North Kitsap High School – The grant helped pay for field trips to Harborview Hospital, where a doctor gave a tour of the emergency room and a slide presentation related to physiology and anatomy, and to Pacific Lutheran University where a professor instructed the students using cadavers. Dynamic Seating Tools for Students – Heidi Brislin – Poulsbo Elementary – Occupational Therapist: Poulsbo Elementary purchased special seat cushions for use by students with Sensory Processing Disorder in order to allow them to improve in-seat behavior and concentration in the classroom. Book for Night Commuters of Uganda – Ms. Peggy Cook and Dr. De Mackinnon – NKHS – 11th Grade English: The grant helped pay for books created by NK students which were shipped to Uganda for the use of students there who have to commute to safe facilities in towns every night. (2006, $300)
Rod Puppet Story Tellers – Beverly Godfrey – Vinland, 2nd Grade: The grant was used to purchase materials for the students to make rod puppets. The puppets were used to retell stories from their reading series and also original stories written by the class. (2006, $100)
Field Trips to PLU Anatomy Lab and Harborview Hospital – Patti Webster – NKHS – Physiology and Anatomy: The grant paid for field trips to Harborview, where a doctor gave a tour of the emergency room and a slide presentation related to physiology and anatomy, and to Pacific Lutheran University where a professor instructed the students using cadavers. Spellography Curriculum – Carla Kessler – Vinland – 6th Grade: Ms. Kessler implemented the “Spellography” curriculum to assist students in spelling and vocabulary, and additional materials were needed to expand the successful program to the other 6th graders at Vinland. (2006, $849.94)
Scope on a Rope – Janet Kragen – Suquamish – 5th & 6th Grade: The school purchased a digital microscope that allows images to be viewed on a laptop computer or projection screen, and saved on the computer. (2006, $259)
Bringing Museums to Students – Mary Lou Macala – Kingston Jr. High, 7th grade History: Funds helped pay for renting and transporting “history kits” from the Burke Museum and the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle. (2006, $300)
Chess Club – Mary Ruth Payne – Pearson Elementary – Librarian: The highly successful after school chess club acquired more tournament quality chess sets to better prepare the students for competitions. (2006, $350)
CPR Booklets and Videos – Joan Starr – Poulsbo Jr. High – 9th Grade Health Education: This project provided the Health Education classes with instructional material on the very latest approved CPR practices, allowing students to become certified. (2006, $300)
Outback Class – Michelle Telles – Kingston Jr. High – Special Education: The grant provided exercise equipment, videos, and instructional books for a Wellness class provided to “at risk” students. (2006, $143.95)
Teens Teaching About Tobacco – Gayl TenEyck – Poulsbo Jr. High – 9th Grade English: A group of Poulsbo Junior High students were trained at the Kitsap County Health Department to instruct other students about the dangers of tobacco use. The students made presentations to 5th grade classes throughout the District. (2006, $300)
Bus Bucks for Books – Pat Bennett-Forman – Wolfle: Newly purchased reading books were used in a program aimed at improving bus ride behavior and encouraging students to read on the bus. (2005, $300)
Computerized Spanish Quizzes and Novels – Rene Fossum – North Kitsap High School: The grant helped purchase computerized quizzes and corresponding novels written in Spanish to be used by English Language Learners (ELL) students and Spanish class students. (2005, $183.20)
Simple Machines – Susan Fritts – Poulsbo Elementary 4th grade: Funds were used to purchase building sets for hands-on experience in their unit on simple machines. (2005, $336.80)
LEGO Sets – Beverly Godfrey and Tiff Watland – Vinland 1st and 2nd grade: The grant was used to purchase 24 LEGO sets. Students learned to write for a variety of purposes by first designing and then writing instructions for building LEGO cars. (2005, $280)
Comprehension Library Books – Laurie Harney – Poulsbo Elementary 4th grade: used the grant money to help establish a teaching library of storybooks that intentionally and purposefully model the comprehension strategies of inferring, questioning, determining importance, predicting, summarizing, and making connections. The goal is to compile a collection of seven to ten books for each strategy. (2005, $300)
Software for Surplus Computers – Mary Lou Macala - Kingston Jr. High 7th and 8th grade: used funds to purchase operating systems for five surplus Imac computers which her history and English students used to prepare History Day documentaries. (2005, $300)
Heart Rate Monitor Watches – Leslie Maule and Barbara Hall – Breidablik 4th grade: District Science Coach, Lillian Cone, submitted a proposal to purchase heart rate monitor watches which were used in their combined science and physical fitness program. Students studied the circulatory system and participated in an exercise program to improve fitness. (2005, $300)
Trip to Islandwood School – Nicky Seaberg and Barb Emel – Parent Assisted Learning Program (PAL): used their grant to help fund an educational field trip to Islandwood School for science presentations. (2005, $300)
Model Airplanes – Mark Stebbing – Kingston Jr. High 7th grade: grant was used to purchase flying model airplane kits for students to use in their unit on Principles of Flight. (2005, $300)
Computer Hardware Learning Tools – Rich Wendt, Computer Technician – Vinland: used his grant to help sponsor Vinland’s own “geek squad” of students who dissemble, clean, and reassemble school computers. The funds were used to buy specialized supplies and tools. (2005, $100)
Functional Academics Class – Paula Wood – Kingston Jr. High special education: funds were used to purchase food so the students could learn to plan a menu and cook their own lunch once a month. (2005, $300)
Simple Machines – Colleen Fairchild – Vinland 3rd and 4th grade: Funding was used to purchase two construction sets which the students used to build compound machines made up of simple machines. They then wrote up an explanation of how their machine worked. (2004, $237.88)
After School Clubs – Marsha Rova – Wolfle: This grant helped purchase supplies for several after school clubs supervised by the teacher and run by volunteers. The clubs included a Scrabble club, chess club, and nature club. (2004, $250)
A/R book Quizzes – Rene Fossum – North Kitsap High School: The funds purchased quiz material for a computerized learning system for remedial reading and writing classes. (2004, $250)
Partnerships in Learning – Patricia Sheehan – Poulsbo Elementary 5th grade: Funds were used to pay transportation costs for Seattle University students to come to Poulsbo Elementary to mentor students on dealing with peer pressure and talk about some of their school experiences and what they learned about making choices. Cooking Program – Leah Titze – Kingston Jr. High: Funding helped initiate a cooking program for “Functional Academics” students by allowing the purchase cookware and ingredients. The students were able to use math, reading, and science skills in their preparation of recipes. (2004, $250)
