Poulsbo Elementary is located in the northeast corner of the school complex in Poulsbo, on Noll Road. It serves Poulsbo and areas to the east.
Poulsbo Elementary teachers have been very active in pursuing North Kitsap Schools Foundation classroom grants and have been awarded more than 15. The grants have ranged from $180 to $415.
The grants have helped teachers bring an amazing variety of learning opportunities to their students. Patricia Sheehan partnered with a Seattle University professor to bring college psychology students to Poulsbo to mentor her 5th grade students by sharing their school and life experiences with the younger students. The $180 grant allowed her to pay ferry fares for the college students.
English Language Learners program coordinator, Suzy Rau, and reading teacher, Joyce Schultz, have teamed up on two grants to purchase “leveled” reading books from the Reading Recovery program to use with new and struggling readers. Their use with 3rd through 5th grade students was so successful that they subsequently applied for and received a grant to purchase similar books for kindergarten age students.
Librarian, Nancy Bale, has received two grants for establishing a Peruvian Culture Teaching Kit that teachers from all schools can use to enrich their Latin America social studies curriculum.
First grade teachers Lisa Hawkins, Tracy Zeringer, Susan Longan, and Carolyn Robinson have teamed up to apply for grants and been awarded five among them. They share the resources that they’ve acquired to use with all of the first graders. Projects have ranged from developing wildlife habitat in an unused patio area to purchasing items for the classroom that are intended to improve the learning environment such as fluorescent light filters, bean bag chairs, and exercise music tapes.
